When selecting bolts for any application, the performance grade is your first clue to their strength and reliability. But what do those numbers actually mean-and how are they achieved?

Decoding the Grade

Take grade 6.8 as an example. The first digit (6) indicates the nominal tensile strength-multiply by 100 to get 600 MPa. The second digit (8) is the yield-to-tensile ratio times 10, so 0.8. Multiply the two: 600 × 0.8 = 480 MPa nominal yield strength. Simple math, but it tells you exactly what the fastener can handle.

Material Alone Isn't Enough

Achieving a given grade isn't just about choosing the right steel-it's about the right process. Lower grades (e.g., 4.6, 4.8) can often be cold-formed directly with no post-treatment. But as you move up the scale, heat treatment becomes non-negotiable. For 8.8-grade bolts, even quality materials will fall short without proper quenching and tempering-risking insufficient strength or brittle failure.

Process Makes the Difference

Consider 35# steel. With cutting or hot forging, it typically reaches only about 5.8. Cold heading moves it to 6.8. But add quenching and tempering, and the same material jumps to 8.8. The message: the grade is a system outcome, not a material property.

The Bottom Line

Performance isn't stamped into the steel-it's earned through the right combination of material and thermal–mechanical processing. Skip either, and you'll never hit the grade. Always validate with real process trials, and follow applicable standards for your industry.
